I always believed that I was born in the wrong era because of my affinity for flared jeans and palazzo pants. Back in highschool, I owned more flares than straight-cut jeans but my mom would always contest every time I'd wear one because that would mean I'd have to wear my three-inch wedge sandals (hi, dets!) She'd say that I'm still too "young" for heels and if I really want my flares, we'd have to custom-fit it to my height. But that would mean cutting off the flared portions, right? So of course I said no. That is like scraping off the ganache off my chocolate cake. You know what I mean?

Fast-forward to 2011 when skinny jeans were the holy grail and I went out wearing flares (the hippie in me) and someone called me out for wearing such an outdated look through a social media post. My emotions were that of amusement and nonchalance because I couldn't understand where the hate (ignorance) was coming from-- it was too hilarious. But then again, I think I knew where she was coming from in terms of dressing, sentence construction, sartorial choices and overall fashion sense. or lack thereof.

What I'm trying to say in this post is that you do not call people out for their different take in fashion trends, be them old or new. As cliché as this sound but as how Yves Saint Laurent put it "Fashion fades, style is eternal." Your personal style will get you through different eras, trends and seasonal collections of fashion. It is what will and should define you, not the current trends, not your friends' choices and certainly not what other people tell you to wear. Maybe, just maybe, the only time you call people out is when they wear their leggings as jeans showing off that hideous camel toe, or when their undergarments doesn't match their clothes (hello red bra straps under a white top! hideous!) or when they wear clothes inappropriate for a particular occasion. Case in point: Shorts or rompers to a formal event or daisy dukes (okay, shorts) to a semi-formal event, or shorts to an event requiring smart casual attire. It may be summer all year round in the Philippines but one just can't wear shorts to each and every occasion esp to an event that requires you to put on something decent (read: definitely not shorts.) Besides, I don't think one has the right to call people out on their slightly different take in trends esp if it comes from someone who wears a cami to a social gathering where people are expected to put their best (and stylish) foot forward. So, no. You do not call people out when you can't even tell that you are wearing ill-fitting trousers.

Having said that, here's me wearing a cami with an embroidered cardigan over it to make it more decent for PLDT's HomeXAirBnb event at Villa Resort Busay. I've been on the lookout for the best fitting flare jeans and good thing Forever21 and H&M carry a whole new collection of summer must-haves that include flares in denim and in soft jersey material.

Flare pants flatter your curves or play them up if you're lacking in that department. The trick to pulling off this look is to pick one in the right size and length. Flare pants should hug you just right on the hips, skinny on the legs, with the hem grazing just above the sole of your shoes. Picking one that's too long for you makes you look shabby while a pair that's too short makes people think that you've outgrown your clothes. Both are unsightly, trust me. UNLESS, of course, you are going for the kick flare trend then that's fine but otherwise, hell no.

Flare pants are flattering if you're wearing heels because they make your legs look like they could go on for days (hashtag LegsForDays.) You can go for wedge sandals, sky-high platforms or mid-heel block heels like the one I'm wearing here, but your footwear greatly depends on the length of your jeans, really. Overall, finding balance is the key to pulling off this quintessential 70s trend.

Bisou!
